Who Is The CVB Really Fighting For?

Recently, Enjoy Estes Park submitted to the Estes Park CVB the calendar dates for the NEW Scarecrows In Estes Park. Scarecrows In Estes Park is an exciting new idea for ALL the business owners, visitors and the community. There has been tremendous enthusiasm regarding Scarecrows.

Over 150+ businesses are participating. In addition, Saturday and Sunday events, activities and fun has also been added. Each weekend (5 weekends in October), there will be: Scarecrows In Estes Park, Balloon Twisting, Pumpkins, Children's Face Painting, Scarecrow Judging, Hayrides, Halloween Crafts, Children's Cookie Decorating, Live Music, Children's Scarecrow Coloring Contest, Story Telling, Crafts, Skin Painting, Bean Bag Toss, 1 Hour Deals, Entertainment, Children's Fake Tattoos, Glass Blowing, Puppets, Pizza Decorating For The Children, Guess How Many Contests & MORE!

Unfortunately, the Estes Park CVB indicated that they could NOT place the Scarecrows In Estes Park on their online calendar because they have a regulation that states that any event over 7 days can NOT be promoted. How many businesses do we have to get involved for the CVB to think that it is a valuable event for the whole business community. We had the same problem when Savor Estes Park was started, too!

Here is a quote from the LMD's annual report:

''Nearly a dozen new major marketing initiatives were launched by the Estes Park LMD in 2010, resulting in a significant expansion of Estes Park’s destination marketing strategy. Each aligned directly with the mission of the LMD: to attract visitors to the District through effective and efficient marketing in order to drive year-round economic growth.

We look forward to building on destination marketing strategies developed in 2010 and working alongside our strategic partners and stakeholders in implementing new marketing initiatives in 2011.
''

Executive Director, Estes Park Local Marketing District

RESPONSES:

Since this commentary was posted, the CVB decided to include Scarecrows on their Internet calendar (a few days ago). Obviously, there was some influence by people to change the CVB's decision. We appreciate the CVB's cooperation and the Estes Park businesses appreciate it, too.   PT

The Town Of Estes Park Rises To Try To Help An Injured Cormorant.

While walking around Lake Estes today, we spotted an injured Cormorant on the rocks. The bird was not moving his legs at all. We slowly, approached to about 3 feet away from the bird and noticed that he had a piece of fishing line with 3 fishing weights attached to his foot.

We called the Police Department, the Public Works Department, the Wildlife Service, the Estes Park Birding Club and the Parks & Recreation Department. Even though there weren't some people available at the time, the whole town was responsive to the situation and returned our call as soon as they contacted the appropriate people.

We weren't able to remove the fishing line from the bird's injured leg, but at least we had the comfort that people were responsive to the sad situation at Lake Estes. Tomorrow, we will try to locate the bird again and help to save the bird.

The town used to have plastic tubes for the fisherman to place their old fishing lines in. We noticed that the tubes were not in place this year, so we mentioned that to the Parks & Recreation Department.

I am giving the town 5 thumbs-up for their response to the situation.

Why Did McDonald's Win The Enjoy Estes Park Trophy?

Why did McDonald's win the Enjoy Estes Park Trophy for this month (July)? It is plain and simple. They embrace the efforts of Enjoy Estes Park and what Enjoy Estes Park is trying to do to help the businesses of Estes Park.

Does McDonald's need brand recognition? Absolutely not. It is one of the strongest and most recognized brand around the world.

So why did McDonald's embrace the efforts of Enjoy Estes Park? It is because McDonald's never stops trying to maximize their exposure in a region. They realize that business is tough and in these tough economic conditions, business has to get tougher in marketing.

So, it really puzzles me why the rest of the Estes Park businesses don't use all the resources available to them to maximize their exposure and increase the potential for success.

Maybe there is a lesson to be learned from McDonald's winning the Enjoy Estes Park Trophy. I just hope the businesses don't wake up too late.

It just shows you that every business needs all the help that they can get no matter how big the business is. Thanks for your good work in town for all you do.   John

Why Does Only The Little Guy Step Up To The Plate In A Time Of Need?

Last October, a terrible fire broke out and leveled the Park Theater Mall. Numerous businesses were destroyed and most of the businesses have not opened again. There was a lot of talk of how organizations and the town would try to help the businesses during the crisis. But most of the ideas faded away and most of the talk was just talk.

But, a small independent Estes Park film company, Under Oath Productions, owned and operated by Jerimiah Whitlock talked the talk and walked the walk. He realized how hard it is to start all over again and his company rose to the occasion. Jerimiah also runs and operates the 7522 Network.

He contacted The Hiking Hut and offered to produce a commercial for their business for free. He didn't want any publicity for his generosity. He only wanted to do what was right for the Estes Park business community. Perhaps other organizations and the town should learn from his generosity and follow his example.

His company is currently producing many Estes Park business commercials and documentaries.

It's usually the small guy in town that understands what is needed. I don't know why it is, but at least someone is stepping up to the plate. Well done!   Karen

Why Aren't The Estes Park Flower Seeds Recycled?

Estes Park does a wonderful job in placing flowers all over Estes Park. Just before the beginning of the summer, many workers are seen throughout the town cleaning up the flower beds and planting one flower at a time.

But here is my question? After all the flowers have gone past their ability to flower again, the process of cleanup begins. Every flower from every bed is picked up and placed in the town's little carts. Every flower bed is meticulously cleaned for the winter. I once asked a worker where the dead flowers with all those potential beautiful seeds go. Their answer ''The flowers are dumped''. Why aren't the flower seeds made available to any person living in town for the yards. It would be a great resource of additional beauty for the town.

That is why I have given the town 1 thumbs down as they should consider recycling the seeds and making them available for all the residents of Estes Park.

RESPONSES:

I have really never thought about the flower/seed issue. Maybe the Estes Park department that is in charge of the flowers should be contacted and the idea should be discussed with them. A great point regarding the seeds. Thanks.   Frank
